KUSA - The people at Health Grades, a hospital rating service based in Colorado, are out with a special set of awards. Their Outstanding Patient Experience Awards are for hospitals that do the best job in patient care, and its the patients themselves that are the source of the ratings.
On 9NEWS 6 a.m. we opened up the gradebook with the help of Dr. Richard May M.D., Senior Physician for Health Grades.
He says the ratings are based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey (HCAHPS), a 27-question study.
It covers physician and nurse communication, hospital staff responsiveness, hospital cleanliness and noise levels, medication information, and post-discharge care results.
Dr. May says this is a national standardized publicly reported survey of patients perspectives of hospital care. The data covered in this study is from July 2007-June 2008 and includes more than 3,700 hospitals in America.
The Colorado hospitals that made the list for outstanding patient care:
Hospitals in the Denver area receiving the honor include:

"Patients listen to each other when it comes to recommending a physician or hospital. This study takes thousands of patient experience surveys and compiles them into one easy to understand rating," said Dr. May. "The HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award? recognizes those hospitals that deliver a level of service most highly rated by patients."
