LAFAYETTE - As first-time parents Ashley and Kaleb Scotty knew there would be surprises along the way, but nothing could have prepared them for giving birth on a sidewalk.
"Every time we plan something, it seems like something always happens," said Ashley of their luck.
The Scottys planned on giving birth in a hospital room at Exempla Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, but three days before their due date, plans changed unexpectedly.
"I definitely planned on having the drugs and being comfortable and having my mom there," said Ashley.
On Thursday, Ashley started having contractions. She went to the hospital twice only to learn she was going through false labor. Finally, early Friday morning her water broke at home and the couple made their way back to the hospital.
"It was the worst ride, I was in so much pain," Ashley said.
Once the couple arrived, Ashley asked her husband to go get a wheelchair, but it wasn't fast enough.
"He (the baby) just kind of came out and I caught him and the wheelchair was behind me and we kind of passed him back like a football," Ashley said.
The couple delivered their own baby on the sidewalk just in front of the main entrance to the hospital.
"I still keep thinking about it, I can't believe it happened like that," said Ashley.
Mom and baby were just fine. Ashley and Kaleb decided to name their baby boy Mason Kane Scotty, even though some hospital employees had some other suggestions.
"Everyone said we should name him Mason Parker, like parking lot," laughed Ashley.
